Dr. Rafaela
R. Robles |
Dr.
Rafaela R. Robles is Director and Senior Scientist of the Center
for Addiction Studies, and Director of the Caribbean Basin and
Hispanic Addiction Technology Transfer Center, both housed at
the Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine, in
Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Dr. Robles received her Ed.D. in Sociology
from Columbia University in 1970. She has over 25 years of
experience in the substance abuse and addictions field, and has
published more than 40 journal articles and chapters in the
areas of drug abuse, mental health, and health care services.
Before establishing the Center for Addiction Studies in 1993,
Dr. Robles was a professor, researcher, and research consultant
at the Graduate School of Public Health, Medical Sciences Campus
of the University of Puerto Rico, and a Research Scientist for
Puerto Rico’s Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services
Administration. Dr. Robles is a past member of the AIDS Research
Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health, NIDA’s
National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, and the NIH Review
Committee. She currently serves as a SAMHSA/CSAP Expert Panel
member and on other professional boards and committees. In 1982
she was honored as Most Distinguished Professor of the School of
Public Health, University of Puerto Rico, and in 1998 was
awarded the status of Professor Eminentis at the Universidad
Central del Caribe, School of Medicine. She also has received
the NIDA National Hispanic Science Network’s Outstanding
Mentorship award, among other honors. Dr. Robles’ current
efforts are focused on transferring drug abuse research to
practice; conducting research on drug use and HIV/AIDS
prevention, co-occurring mental health conditions, and health
services utilization among Hispanics; and mentoring minority
researchers. This research is supported by grants from NIDA/NIH
and SAMHSA/CSAT, Puerto Rico Community Substance Abuse and AIDS
Outreach, Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands Addiction Technology
Transfer Center, Puerto Rico Drug Abuse Research Development
Program, and Puerto Rican Drug users in NY and PR: HIV Risk
Behavior Determinants, among others. |
